Every January, the world feels like it’s collectively holding its breath. Midnight hits, and the expectation to reinvent ourselves descends. We draft lists of resolutions—eat better, work out, save more money—only to watch many of these promises fizzle by February. It’s an exhausting cycle, and no surprise that New Year’s resolutions have started to lose their luster.

But I believe resolutions aren’t inherently the problem; it’s our approach to them that’s gone off course. In our rush to overhaul our lives, we’ve turned goal-setting into a high-pressure performance. Seriously, where does this pressure come from to have all your shit together, to completely address all your shortcomings right now? We focus on what we lack, fixating on our perceived shortcomings instead of acknowledging how far we’ve already come.

What if we looked at New Year’s resolutions differently? Instead of an exhausting checklist of “shoulds” and “fixes,” we could start with reflection. Taking inventory of our lives—what’s working, what’s bringing us joy, and what’s no longer serving us—creates a more meaningful foundation for setting intentions. By celebrating our progress, we shift from a mindset of scarcity to one of abundance, opening the door to inspired, authentic growth.

I listened to a talk on NPR once with a celebrated muralist who explained his process for painting such large, elaborate works. He would grid-out the canvas and take the mural square by square. So maybe, in his mind, he felt he had no idea how to paint such a large rendition of a New York City skyline; but he did know that this square should be dark blue and have one star in it, and that the square next to it should house the top of the Empire State Building. It's a concept that I'm working to apply in my own life: the fully realized version of your best self is really a bunch of little "squares" of better habits and mindset shifts.

Goal-setting doesn’t have to be confined to January 1st, and you don't have to be successful the first time (or even the first 5 times). Life doesn’t adhere to a calendar, and neither should our ambitions. The new year is simply an opportunity to harness collective momentum and turn inward to ask ourselves: What do I want to nurture this year? Whether it’s strengthening relationships, pursuing a creative project, or prioritizing health, goals born from self-awareness and celebration feel lighter and more achievable.

When we approach resolutions from a place of self-compassion, the process becomes less about chasing perfection and more about building a life that aligns with our values. Maybe the key isn’t to resolve to be “better” but to resolve to be more intentional. Let’s make the new year a time to honor our past, embrace our present, and dream boldly about our future—without the burnout.

2024 was our first full year of being open as a salon, and with it came phenomenal growth. The first year really sets the tone for how the team will work together, especially in a salon collective setting.
